Summer Safety Tips in Heat

The summertime is an amazing time for families to get out and make memories! It is a time where families have fun swimming, going on walks, spending time at a park, going to a theme park, and many more activities. As fun as those memories are, things can take a turn for the worst quick if you do not watch out for the summer heat. Below are a few tips on how to keep your family safe as you enjoy the summer as well as what to look out for.

Dress in Cool Clothes: Make sure that your family is wearing cool lightweight clothes that allow your sweat to evaporate. Dark colored clothing holds in heat, so choose light colored clothing.

Stay Hydrated: Make sure that you have plenty of water to drink as well as drinks with electrolytes. The goal is to make sure you are putting as much liquid into your body as you would be sweating out. Remember, if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated and need to drink a lot of water to refill your body.

Sunscreen: Make sure everyone in your family has plenty of sunscreen to protect their skin. Pay attention to the SPF you use and how often it directs to re-apply based on the strength of the sunscreen. Check your sunscreen for instructions on how to apply to children.

Plenty of Breaks: While time flies when you are having fun, make sure you plan on breaks where everyone can get out of the sun/heat and rest to recharge.

Seek Medical attention if anyone in your family begins to experience the following symptoms while outside in the heat:

  • Headache

  • Feeling faint

  • Unusually Sleepy

  • Not urinating for hours despite drinking liquids

  • Nausea/Vomiting

  • Muscle Spasms

Note: Please refer to your pediatrician’s instructions regarding summer safety tips for infants under 6 months.
